Coffin sandwiches are an easy Halloween food made with simple ingredients. Ready in 15 minutes, they are the perfect appetizer for your spooky party!

These mini sandwiches don’t require any special tools or skills.

How to make Halloween coffin sandwiches

The preparation is very simple and quick.

    Tools:

    • Chopping board & knife – Make sure to use a sharp serrated knife!
    • Small bowl & spoon – Or spatula, to mix the mayo sauce.
    • Spatula – Or a serving knife for spreading.

    Ingredients:

    • Sandwich bread
    • Mayonnaise
    • Mustard – I used Dijon, but any kind will work just great.
    • Ham
    • Cheese

To make them, take 2 slices of bread. Spread with mayo mixture. Take one and top with ham and cheese. Cover with another slice. Remove the crust and cut it in half.

Cut so they resemble coffins (check photos) and top with crosses, made out of a cheese slice.

Or, you can write R.I.P. there with ketchup or mustard. If you have the dispenser squeeze bottles for these condiments, they make writing the letters so easy.

If not, you can make a cone shape out of baking parchment, fill it with one of the condiments and pipe the letters.

Another alternative is using a resealable plastic bag.

    Expert tips

    • The softer the bread, the harder it is to cut it nicely. For that reason, it is best to use a day (or 2) old loaf. A blunt knife will make it harder as well.
    • Crustless bread might be a bit more expensive, but you will not end up with any cut-offs, so you won’t be wasting anything! If you can, buy it. It will also speed up your prep.
    • To serve them, you can place them on a bed of salad, if you like.

    Sandwich filling

I am using a simple combo of ham and cheese. As a spread, I used a mixture of mayo and Dijon mustard.

You can use anything you like though. Any sweet or savory filling will work just great.

What is a good sandwich spread?

This depends on what you like. Here are a few ideas you might like:

    • Pesto
    • Cream cheese
    • Hummus
    • Peanut butter
    • Cinnamon honey butter
    • Chutney

    Storage

These coffin finger sandwiches can be prepared in advance and kept in the fridge in an air-tight container for a few hours.

    Prep Time 15 minutes mins
    Total Time 15 minutes mins
    Servings 12 mini sandwiches

    Ingredients

    • ⅓ cup mayonnaise (see note 1)
    • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard (see note 2)
    • 12 sandwich bread (thin slices, see note 3)
    • 12 ham (thin slices or 6 thick, see note 4)
    • 7 sliced cheese (see note 5)
Prevent your screen from going dark

    Instructions

    • In a small bowl, combine mayo and mustard. Spread a thin layer over each slice of bread.
    • When done, top 6 slices with ham (see note 3), cheese and cover with the remaining bread slices. Trim off the crust and cut each sandwich in half.
    • Cut each rectangle into a coffin shape. Out of the last cheese slice, cut thin strips and arrange them on top of each “coffin” in a cross shape.
    • Keep in the fridge covered before serving.

    Notes

    1. This quantity of mayo sauce should be plenty for 12-16 pieces.
    2. Use any mustard you have on hand.
    3. Crustless bread is a great option – it will save you some time when prepping!
    4. Any deli ham will work here. Or, it can be substituted with salami. Use either 1 thick or 2 thin slices per sandwich.
    5. Use any sliced cheese you like – Gouda, Edam, Mozzarella, Havarti, Goat cheese,...
